Your future can’t be sacrificed on the altar of your past!
One of the moments in my growing up years that I always had the mixed feeling of excitement and a little worry was when the tree in our house then sheds its leaves. It was beautiful seeing the brownish dead leaves go and fresh ones begin to emerge. That was the cause of my excitement, but on the other hand, I and a number of the other children would be the one to sweep of these fallen leaves. Though the tree was willing to let go of its leaves, it was left to us to also choose to do something to get rid of these leaves that represented the past for the tree.
There’s an old Arab saying that encourages people to write the bad things that have happened to them or they have done on the sea sand so that it can be easily washed away. However, many people find it easier to engrave this unpleasant past in their hearts such that they end up living in the past and being unable to enjoy the change the present brings.
This week is the week preceding the Virginity day (June 13) a day to advocate sexual purity. Some people who have had a painful or wild sexual past tend to want to criticize or recoil from those that have chosen to advocate this sexual purity. Not because they don’t want to be such, but because of the feeling of hopelessness, feeling of guilt that continuously gnaws at them or because they wonder what people that have known them before now would say.
See the truth is you might have done some really not nice things sexually or outside that, you could even be currently involved in it as we speak, pornography, masturbation, rape, all the sexual preliminaries, lesbianism or its male counterpart the list is endless, and you wonder how you would look in the presence of people that have known you with this things before. Let me present this truth to you, choosing to change may not erase your past before men, it may not even change your reputation with some people, but the truth is you have the opportunity of a fresh start with God.
“If people refuse to look at you in a new light and they can only see you for what you were, only see you for the mistakes you’ve made, if they don’t realize that you are not your mistakes, then they have to go.” – Steve Maraboli
